In the south we were fascinated by the lush tropical n backwaters in Kerala (with overnight stays in great hotels), the jungle tours and the overnight stays in the jungle retreat, where we could watch wild elephants at night right in front of our cottage, almost in our front yard, and the impressive city Madurai, with my favorite temple Shri Menakshi, where we were allowed to take part in a nightly ceremony “Lord Shiva is taken to bed with his wife Menakshi”. The local markets were one of our favorite places in Madurai but also in many other cities. The train rides were also impressive, here you get in touch with the very friendly Indian population and can have a lot of fun and insights into social life and the Indian hospitality and the Indian friendliness, which is almost shameful for us Western Europeans, towards strangers and their open interest experience on them.
